Hi,

Saw your comments. I have heard of speechpaths.com but when I went there it was a hosting site. Maybe they are in the middle of changing hosts. In the mean time I found speech-languagepathologist.org . Check it out as it has many useful resources for SLPs.

It may be what you are looking for.

Best Regards,

Jan

Hi Matt, thanks for the tip on Speechpaths. I hadn't been there before. Because I am an SLP and write language therapy software for a living, I am constantly looking for more information...on just about everything! If you haven't graduated yet, I hope you will soon...good luck!... Larry

Letter from a Senator

To: Mr. Matthew Campbell

From: Senator J. Wolohan

To whom it mat concern,

I recently reviewed the letter that you wrote me regarding implementation of federal funds, or advocacy for such funds, for federally assisted families to receive outpatient care. You wrote in your letter about how I probably get letters like that everyday. Well that is true. I usually receive 20-50 letters of such topics everyday. I am sorry to report that two current bills on the Senate Healthcare Commitee's agenda have not received enough votes to pass on to the main Senate.

I know many Americans are faced with Healthcare dilemas everyday, such as how am I going to pay for this, or does this job carry good insurance? I am afraid that our healthcare situation is not one of legislature's doing but rather our economy's. Our economy is unstable. Job's are being lost by the thousands everyday and the Federal Government just cannot hand out insurance to everyone that gets laid off. In short, I sympathize with your concern and wish you the best. However, we must keep a logical outlook on this matter. If we had the perfect America, healthcare would be free. Instead we live in a world where change is the norm. Thus, we must deal with that change when it is dealt our way.

I hope this leads to further insight into your topic and where the federal government fits into the picture. Thank you for you letter Mr. Campbell.

Sincerely,

Sen. J. Wolohan

Home/

Next

Its Over!

Well another summer term has come and gone and many students and sighing due to only one week in between summer and fall term. In CD land, we have come to the end of something that has changed every persons life that were a part of it. We have completed CD 315 in 10 weeks during the summer!!! All I can say is it's time to set back, relax and enjoy the work I have completed and the little bit of vacation I have left.

Before I reviewed my work, I reviewed myself and thought about where I was on June 10th and where I am August 16. Well, I have to say that I am definitely a lot better at HTML than I was in the beginning. Also, I am a better expressionist through my writings than before. I have learned to let loose what is on my mind and not to worry about what others think. In a class where you rarely have face to face interaction, it is important to let your personality shine through your writings. This allows other to get to know you better and possibly shed some light to your own eyes as to how you are percieved by others.

Upon reviewing my work before writing this final journal entry, I began to develop the big head because I am truly proud of my work this summer. Not only am I proud of what I have done, but what my classmates have completed as well. We cannot just gloat in our own work, but realize that it was a group effort to complete this task. When you look back at all the cries for help on email and the sudden occurrence of a web page for someone's topic in an email, you see a team effort. I have been told I perform best on an individual level. However, after being apart of this virtual learning community I think I can work in both settings, but really prefer the group help.

I am proud of all the parts of my MRP because they each seem to flow from one to the other and keep the central theme I was shooting for in the week of June 10th. Not only am I proud of my work, but I am proud of myself and what I have found out about my inner self and possible future. In writing my reflection for the whole MRP, I realized that from the getgo I was thinking of others and what I could do for others to improve their quality of life and ensure them adequate services. Little did I realize that this was an attribute hidden deep within the the caves of my personality. I always hear that you have to look out for number one and never let your feelings override your actions. Yet, with the completion of this class, I am proud to have realized that you can do both of those things and still help people and yourself. The one item that lead me to that conclusion was when you have an idea that you think is yours and no one else has thought of it, someone else has actually already pursued a certain part of that idea and its up to you to put your part in. I know it sounds weird, but when you think about it we are all just players in this world and players depend on each other to get the game won. So I feel that I can look out for number one by doing all I can in research and writing to help others through my work.

Tips to Future Multigenre Explorers

~When I thought I had let myself down because I didnt know which way I was going, I just stopped and thought about the end product and worked backwards. Sometimes doing things in reverse helps ease the situation. Do not get frustrated. Stop, look and reorganize.

~I think everyone this summer has gave this tip, but I feel I must add it too. DO ALL WORK IN WORD AND SAVE IT. With an internet class you can never be to safe when it comes to your work and deadlines

~A final tip would be to not be non-personable and non-active in the group. If you have a problem ask your peers. Chances are that problem has already happened to someone else an they may not ask the question you need an answer to. Your instructor can not help you unless you show you need help.

Genre 3: Letter to a Politician

To: Senator J. Wolohan

From: Matthew S. Campbell, SLP

Dear Senator,

My name is Matthew Campbell, a Speech-Language Pathologist in West Virginia. I am writing you with the sole intention of initiating your concern for our low-income, uninsured families of America, and their lack of quality care due to their financial status. Of course, legislature has passed many bills and worked very hard in establishing the ideal healthcare system in America. Yet, from my point of view, it has very many flaws. I see, on a daily basis, clients that are in dire need of clinical intervention for speech and language services, yet turn down our services because of lack of insurance or their financial status.

The sad thing is that you probably get sob stories like this one on a daily basis. However, this story is urging you to push for federal funding for low-income families to receive healthcare services. Continually seeing potential clients turn away from intervention because of its price is not only downhearting, but a serious threat to our economy. For instance, what are the chances that Joe, a decent hard working man who has recently had a TBI and needs outpatient therapy to fully recover, will get a decent paying job to support his family is his speech or some other functional modality is impaired. I would say not very good. Not only is he out of work, but if you do not step up to the plate in Washington and fight for Joe's, and the rest of America's, rights, then that is one less vote for you next election.

Therefore, in conclusion, I urge you and your advisors to look into the matter of some allocation of funds. Even if it is small amounts, we can build on that. I am a firm believer in 100% intervention for everyone who needs it in America, as well as the world. Yet, we will never get there if the proper channels are not primed and ready to fight for what they are in office for...the people that put them in office! Thank you very much for your time.

Sincerely,

Matthew S. Campbell

Home/

Next

Welcome to Matts Webliography

Welcome to Matts Webliography! Here you will find interesting stuff to check out on the Web. Sites that deal with fun stuff to discipline areas in Speech Pathology. Have fun!

Fun stuff:

I love playing on the internet and one site that allows you to design robotic figures and then give them animation is Sodaplay.

Since I have started college, one of the best ways to cut down on telephone bills is to chat online with friends and family. A great tool to use to do that is ICQ.

My favorite passtime is Golf. I love to play and watch golf on TV. If you like golf as much as I do, visit the home of golf.

Discipline Stuff

When you think of Speech Pathology/Audiology on the web, you have to include ASHA. ASHA stands for the American Speech Language and Hearing Association. ASHA is the very basis of what our field stands for. This site contains resources for the professional speech pathologist, the student (such as research resources) and parents of clients or the client themselves. Whatever your speech and hearing needs, ASHA has it.

As a student at Marshall University I would encourage you, if you are interested in attending, to visit their homepage. If you are interested in a degree in Communication Disorders, click the previous link to find out about Marshalls Communication Disorders program.

Research Resources

I started my research on advocacy for 100% of all clients that needed speech & language intervention to be serviced at SpeechPaths, a reliable site that gives links to various state and federal associations to gain further information on certain topics.

To locate statistics dealing with percentages of people who are/are not covered by insurance, I used NCHS,a comprehensive site with statistics on healthcare. Here you can look for information on healthcare coverage, percentages of children and adults covered, as well as statistics on every healthcare profession in operation.

This site on Insurance, proved to be helpful in locating statistics on health care insurance. Check it out!

Personal Interests

Well, instead of paying to receive a newspaper, I go to Herald Dispatch Online view exactly what I want know...with money in my pocket!

I love to play sports, one of which is Tennis. This site contains everything tennis, from courts to schools.

Finally, my main priority is this <a href=http://www.bayareawritingproject.org/15/">CD 315 class, so check out what all we are doing this summer! See ya on the flip side!

Home/
Next

The voice is the author, the audience is anyone viewing his work. I think your preface is straight to the point. It sounds very serious and professional which is important for the overall affect I think you are trying to portray about this subject you researched. Good job.

Project Prospectus

Essential Question:

How do we make speech and language intervention available, or at least advocate for its availability, to those who require other federal assistance?

Foundation Questions:

1. What are the statistics on persons who have been denied speech and language service, or who have received service and are unable to pay, due to inability to pay or lack of insurance?

2. What federal funding is available to professionals for them to provide intervention to 100% of all people who require speech therapy?

3. What legal routes need to be taken to ensure proper implementation of such a program?

4. What criteria do hospitals and professional services look at when determining a person’s ability to pay upon receiving services?

5. If such people receive service and have insurance, what do insurance companies look at in order to provide payment?

Tentative Point:

The idea that citizens who require any therapy service, especially speech and language, and show the need for federal assistance can receive funding for adequate and productive intervention.

Tentative Genres:

Poem (Clinician)

Webliography (Clinician)

PowerPoint presentation (Federal Agency)

Pamphlet (Federal Agency)

Letter to the Editor (Client)

Letter to a Politician (Clinician)

Integration of Genres:

I want to show how that through a clients financial status, and the willingness of one clinician to contact federal agencies and lobby for legislature to allot funds for a special program that provides the necessary funds for this client to receive early and productive intervention. The letter to the editor is what starts the ball rolling and the PowerPoint presentation is what wraps up a successful journey to help a client.

Tentative Resources:

Lovern, Ed (2002).
Bronchitis, CD 315=Week One

Week one, what can I say it has been a doozy. First I had to go to the hospital to be treated for chronic bronchitis, which by the way is the most annoying upper respiratory virus one can have. I dont know if its the constant coughing or the lack of adequate breaths that makes me the most agitated. Of course, along with the 11 other classmates, I started the CD 315 class. I have always felt that I was pretty computer literate. I have worked with them since the days of apple computers and the most famous game ever, Oregon Trail. Yet, I have to admit that when I was introduced to the MOO and the types of assignments that we will be doing this summer on the internet, I was forced to step back and realize that I was not as up to snuff on my computer skills as I thought. Yet, the good thing is that this is my only class, so I will have plenty of time to learn all the new things that are within a keyboards reach on the internet.

I set out this week to maintain a tight schedule with our homework assignments and to get up at 8:00 a.m. every morning. I have managed to do one of the two, my homework. At our very first class meeting, we were told time and time again to stay on top of our assignments. Therefore, that has been my top priority this week, learning techniques for and doing the various assigments in a timely manner.

As class got underway, the first day we were introduced to the various library resources we have within our grasps to expand our knowledge and to use in our research project. On day two, things really began to pick up steam. We met online at the MOO to address issues of navigating on the MOO server and communicating with one another. Using this form of interaction online is something new for me. I have always used AOL Instant messenger. Now we have this continuous stream of messaging and various places to meet while interacting. It is just really neat that we have this technology. However, I know this class is not just about interacting on the MOO, it is mostly about a vast array of learning opportunities to expand our field and skills to the internet. It is about confidence. Confidence in the sense that we will probably never lay eyes on Mrs. McComas again until halfway through the course. I know I have gained a tremendous amount of confidence just in the past week in my abilities to post messages and communicate on the MOO. Emailing and checking assignments on the internet should be second nature to any student, especially those that have had Mrs. McComas in the past.

Then there is this Blog site. I have yet to figure out what its place is in our work, except to upload our journals to. Yet, I am sure in the weeks to follow that the Blog and I will become quite good friends. One problem that I find myself facing as I begin to post things to the internet and write emails is the monotony that is involved. I know that sounds weird, but it is so cut and dry. For instance, if I want to email the class a question, I just compose my thoughts in words and send it to some address.net or .com. I think what I am trying to say is that the scenery never changes. The same old black and white pages stare back at you as you begin to fall asleep at the keyboard.

One thing that I read on a classmates Blog was the idea of using the Blog for NSSLHA. I think that is a great idea. Let's face it. It is the 21st century and the internet is pretty conveient for everyone, so why not put it to good use for something that benefits others in our field. I know that with my father and I, we have a radio ministry here in Huntington and I design the station hosts a web page for our ministry. Its a great way to communicate with others interested in the same issues and ideas as you. So I guess I just answered my own question about the Blogs use. Wow, that was one of those learning experiences that Mrs. McComas talks about. That time and experience will never leave my memory now!

I only have one question about this online journal. Is it exactly what you want Mrs. McComas? I know you said to write about the content, process and premise and I usually try to make those sections pretty clear in my writing. Yet, here I have integrated those sections among one another. Please let me know if that format is acceptable.

I have to say that the work that you have put into this class and the types of things we will be learning are not only learning experiences but ways for us to use the latest technology to our greatest advantage. Just as you have read, I had one of those learning experiences while writing this Blog. Well, I guess I am just really looking forward to this class. I love working with computers and using the technology available to its fullest potential. In the end, the payoff is not how much I have done but what I retain for future use.

Home/

Next

One more to go

Well its week nine and it was so good to see everyone at the Marshall Cafe on Tuesday. I really got to talk about some things on my mind and the food was the best part! This week has been pretty busy. I worked, took my client to the TOOL concert, which was an experience in itself. I also had to work on my truck all day Saturday, but its in fine running condition now.

Now as we are winding down, my nerves begin to really get on edge because this time next week Mrs. McComas will have graded our projects and sentenced us to our deaths! HAHA. Yet, in all reality when any class comes to an end everyone gets nervous about their grades and lose sight of what all they have accomplished that term. Therefore, I vow to myself not to worry over my grade, but rather gloat in the fact that I have learned and accomplished so much this summer with this class. Frankly, if you have come this far in the CD program at Marshall, then we should really be focusing on what we can learn and apply rather than our grades. That has been a hard learned lesson for me.

I have had some trouble out of antville today. It doesnt seem to want to publish my entire reflection, but only pieces of it. So, I have emailed Mrs. McComas, but still no reply. Yet, no worries. I have the original copy saved in email so if she wants it then I have it. YAH!!!! I fixed it. I took some time away from my journal to try to fix it and I did. Yay for me!

Anyway, I believe that everyone deserves a great round of applause for keeping up with the assignments, researching them and then finalizing them on the web for millions to see. As I was finalizing my links throuhg my project I realized that not only was I learning but also having fun this summer doing all this internet and computer work. It seems when you do something with your hands it sticks with you rather than having someone tell you everything you need to know and then you dont have any experience. Those situations are for the birds.

Finally, I would just like to call everyone to look back at June 10 and look at August 11 and see what all we have done. It almost seems like yesterday we were in the library learning about the databases. Now we are about to end summer and go to fall classes. Just simply remarkable. See you guys this fall!!!

Reflection

Content

This assignment was titled a Multigenre Research Project, or MRP. It was quite different than any other assignment I had completed in the past. It took an online-research-multigenre approach that challenges the normal thinking of research work. It was first comprised of gather material and doing work online, such as building WebLogs, subscribing to mailing lists and gathering resources only on the internet.

The MRP was composed of a Preface, Acknowlegdments, Information about the Author, Six Genres, Reflection and References. Three of the six genres were predetermined by our instructor. They were a poem, a PowerPoint presentation and a Webliography. The other three I was able to choose. They were a letter to the politician, letter to the editor and a brochure. Each of the genres had to be presented in a different voice, such as client, clinician and third party insurance company in my case.

A unifying theme had to be developed to tie the whole piece together. This would not only help the developer of the MRP to understand where their project was going, but also help the reader flow through the MRP with a knowledge of what is going on or being targeted.

Process

Upon completion of the MRP, I look back at the amount of time and effort that was put into completing this project and say to myself "I have learned more through the completion of this MRP than any other project I have completed." The MRP gave me options, but kept me on a narrow path to completion. The MRP gave me an instructor who was flexible but on the level when it came to finished products. Overall, the MRP put me in three different perspectives on my topic, advocacy for funding for outpatient services to all who require assistance.

Within the first week of this class, I thought I was going to do poorly because of hear-say and looking at the syllabus and thinking "when will I have time to complete these assignments." So first thing first, I had to decide on an essential question. Something that sparked an interest in me and at the same time was of interest to the general public. I first started out with advocacy for just speech-language services, but soon found out that information was rather scarce on such a narrow topic. From there, I developed a broader question of how to provide or advocate for funding for all outpatient services to those who meet the requirements for federal assistance. This topic gave me a wider range of resources as well as a wider target of people with the same interest. Upon completing the essential question, foundation questions were formed to help further guide my research so that I can stay on topic. The next step from here was to develop the six genres.

The thought load for completing the genres was sort of 50/50. Half of them were already chosen for me and the other three I had to choose myself. During my research, my interest had taken a direction toward insurance companies and their outpatient coverage plans. So, I thought that the PowerPoint presentation and the brochure would fit nicely with a big corporation. Then there were four. Thus, the letter to the editor was in the voice of the client and the poem, webliography and letter to the politician was in the voice of me, the clinician. Ok, the voices are down now where is the audience? The audience is anyone who shares an interest in this topic of advocacy and may need a startig ground for their pursuit.

Although I thought that me doing this assignment would not be worth its time because of my topic, I have now realized that others depend on what others accomplish. So I am going to keep working with this idea and toward its perfection in our national healthcare system.

Premise

Now that I have completed this project I now see things in my life I have never seen before. As a result of completing this project, I have realized that the whole process of selecting a topic, research, genres and even the reflection are all a manifestation of my inner self. That is that I am always looking out for the other person before myself, but I have never realized that until just this moment. Its true what they say about a persons personality and true colors showing through in their writing. Well, I just got a big dose of inner self realization through my reflection.

It makes so much sense now though. All through the process of selecting my topic and questions, I kept asking myself what do other people need in our area of work that I can help provide, besides our basic services. Even in the early stages my true colors were showing. I just think its a weird feeling when you realize something new and it hits you like a ton of bricks.

Thanks to this MRP I am now aware of this nations, as well as the worlds, problem with the whole healthcare picture. There are too many people needing services and not enough professionals to step up to the plate and fight insurance companies and ultimately the federal government to ensure that EVERYONE gets the required therapy they need and deserve to but them back as close to normal as possible.

I feel, thanks to the MRP, secure in my actions and navigation of not only the World Wide Web, but of all tasks that I complete. I have done my work, reviewed others and now feel that the future is in this type of interaction and learning. I am a better learner and applier of material thanks to this class and its requirements

In the end thats what it is all about learning. I hope you have learned something from my MRP and I hope that you and myself will continue to learn through this type of interaction the rest of our lives.

Home/

Next

Letter to the Editor

To: Local Dispatch

From: Venecia Kline

I would like to start out by saying that it is about time they published one of my letters in this newspaper. I am writing today to complain about the healthcare system in our area, especially Dopping Pines. I recently had a stroke and am glad to say I am fully recooperated, except for some speech deficits. Due to these deficits, I have to seek speech therapy. Lucky for me, Dopping Pines Medical Center performs outpatient therapy in speech. So, this is where I was referred by my attending physician.

Well to make a long story short, I went to my first day of, supposed, therapy. From the time of my stroke, my insurance has covered 100% for all medical intervention, so I assumed that speech therapy would not be any different. Boy was I fooled. First they told me my insurance did not cover outpatient services and then they told me the price per visit that I WOULD have to pay. I was shocked and discouraged. Shocked by the price and discouraged because I knew I could not afford to pay that price for speech and I needed speech therapy. Also, the next place that provides speech, even remotely close, is 150 miles away.

So I am writing today to encourage those professionals in the field of speech therapy, or any therapy field, to petition their senators, congressmen or the federal government themselves to provide some kind of supplemental funding for qualified individuals to add to their current insurance or funding for low-income families to provide themselves with the quality of care they deserve and need.

Finally, I would like to say that this event in my life has changed my whole outlook on the healthcare regulations passed by our government and upheld by our insurance companies. It's ridiculous and needs to be reorganized from the top down .

Sincerely,

Venecia L. Kline

Home/

Next

I would first of all like to thank Mrs. McComas for putting for the effort to make this class fun and a true learning experience. A special thanks goes to all of the people who I see or at least interact with everyday...my classmates! You guys...I mean girls are the best. Thanks Again!

Home/

Next

Preface

This Multigenre Research Project,MRP, was created in compliance with the requirements set forth for the Communication Disorders, CD, 315 class in the summer of 2002. This class is designed to shift from the norms of an everyday classroom and put the student in a virtual environment where he or she can interact with their peers and post their work throughout the semester. All persons represented in this project or their problems are totally fictitious and should not be regarded as actual clients and disorders.

The topic I chose for this MRP is finding out how to provide speech-language intervention, as well as other outpatient services, to those persons who require federal assistance to attain such therapies. During my studies at Marshall, I have learned a great deal about different disorders, possible treatment options and family education. However, the topic of funding for needy patients has never been addressed. Advocacy for funding has always been a true concern in my life and I hope to continue to fight for it during my course of clinical practice.

The MRP requires intricate parts that work together to present the bigger picture, or the main topic. After choosing a topic, I then began research and chose an outline of what I was presenting and how I was going to present it. I used a letter from a senator to tie the whole MRP together and show viewers that the federal government creates a bigger mess when they try to redo healthcare regulations and let the big insurance corporations run their thinking and then prices become outrageous, especially to federally assisted families.

Finally we had to choose six different genres to present our work and in different voices. Three of the genres are pre-determined by our instructor. They are a poem, a webliography and a PowerPoint presentation. The other three I chose were a letter to the editor, a letter to a politician and a brochure. These genres, I feel, can be written in a way as to express the three various views on therapy. The client, clinician and coverer.

I hope you enjoy viewing my MRP and all of the support work included with it. It has truly been an experience I will never forget and I hope others will learn as much, if not more, as I did while reviewing the MRP contents.

Home/

Next

Voice: Matt

Audience: Whoever is reading his project.

Say back: This piece serves to tell about Matt's topic, why he chose it, and how he developed it.

Bless: I like your disclaimer at the beginning! Kind of reminded me of "names have been changed to protect the innocent"! Ha ha! This part looks really good. You've included info about your project and genres, and you've talked about why this topic means something to you.

Address: Maybe tell a little bit more about each genre. Looks good!
